Shumari (not Mubarak)
A man who bears a striking resemblance to the ex-president and Egyptian political prisoner Hosni Mubarak was greeted with outrage when Cairo citizens mistook him for his exceedingly unpopular doppelgänger on Sunday, according to the Dubai-based cable network Al Arabiya.
A throng of people in the Cairo district of Heliopolis surrounded Mohamed Abdullah Shumari, a Yemeni national, attempting to seize him for fleeing his life sentence in prison. Mr. Shumari was en route to visit relatives.
Shumari was only able to convince angry mobs that he was not an escaped Mubarak — who has been receiving treatment in a military hospital after suffering a stroke last month — by showing his Yemeni passport and speaking his Yemeni tongue.
After the misunderstanding was cleared up and those who were trying to "catch" Mr. Shumari apologized, he was sent on his way by local authorities.
In the past few hours, images and tweets of Mr. Shumari have dominated the #Mubarak feed on twitter, making the Yemeni man who was trying to visit his family an even hotter topic than the deposed president.
