Jim Carrey is denying allegations he gave STD’s to his late ex-girlfriend, Cathriona White, who committed suicide in September 2015. The claim is being made by her estranged husband, Mark Burton, who’s suing Carrey for White’s wrongful death.
In Burton’s lawsuit, he accuses the comedic actor of providing White with the prescription drugs that killed her, despite knowing she was prone to depression. His legal documents, which were amended, now also claim Carrey “knowingly gave White STDs, lied about the fact he’d given her the diseases and then ‘dumped’ her after she confronted him.” But Carrey issued a statement on Friday in which he said if Burton’s lawsuit, “Is this the way a ‘husband’ honors the memory of his ‘wife?’ The real disease here is greed, shameful greed!”
Carrey’s lawyer, Martin Singer, also responded to the allegations by saying, “The claim that Mr. Carrey gave Cathriona White an STD is categorically disputed. This is a desperate, bogus claim made by the ‘husband’ of the sham marriage.” He added, “My client will not pay money to end this opportunist’s transparent shakedown lawsuit, and this malicious case will be dismissed.”
Prior to the STD allegations being made, Carrey also denied he played any part in White’s tragic death. On Monday night, the actor released a statement saying, “It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world.” He added, “I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat’s troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone’s control. I really hope that some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace.”
