A black man named Keith Lamont Scott was shot dead by police outside an apartment complex in Charlotte, North Carolina on Tuesday night while the cops were searching for someone else. Celebrities are now reacting to the incident. See stars’ reactions below.
Scott was reportedly waiting in his car for his son to get off a school bus while cops were in the area looking for another man with an outstanding warrant. During the search, officers said they saw Scott exit his vehicle holding a firearm, then get back inside. In a statement, police said they approached the car, but Scott got out again and “posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers who subsequently fired their weapon striking the subject.”
Among the celebrities reacting to the news on Twitter was Rosie O’Donnell, who simply tweeted, “#KeithLamontScott.” Singer Michelle Williams said, “Oh wow, I’m in Charlotte as we speak and just saw the news of another black man gunned down by police here in Charlotte.” And Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein wrote, “#KeithLamontScott was a human being who was killed today by a plainclothes police officer who was searching for someone else. #ThisHasToStop.”
Karrueche Tran tweeted, “And another one SMH RIP #KeithLamontScott,” while Jeffrey Wright noted, “#KeithLamontScott is 788 on a grim ’16 list. Police shootings are down slightly from ’15 but attention must be paid.” In addition to commenting on Scott, Sophia Bush referenced Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man killed by police last week. “A father was shot picking up his kids from school. Another, because his car broke down… Both dead now. WE HAVE A PROBLEM,” the actress wrote.
Meanwhile, Lily Allen expressed, “The world is collapsing in on itself isn’t it? In more ways than I can count.” Spike Lee wrote in all caps, “WE ARE TARGETS. SHOT DOWN DEAD LIKE DOGS IN THESE AMERICAN STREETS.” And finally, Leslie Jones offered, “I use to think thats the worst thing for a cop is having shot a kid. but now it seems like the norm. I mean damn. we have to do something.”
