He will play a new brother to Lucifer and Amenadiel.
Michael Imperioli has booked a hellish new role.
The Sopranos alum has joined the upcoming second season of Fox's Lucifer, the show's executive producers revealed Monday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour.
Imperioli will play a new brother of Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and Amenadiel (DB Woodside). He joins new season-two additions Tricia Helfer, who plays their mom, and Aimee Garcia.
Imperioli, an Emmy winner for his portrayal of Christopher Moltisanti on the landmark HBO drama The Sopranos, most recently starred on the Amazon original series Mad Dogs, which executive producer Shawn Ryan revealed in February would not be returning for a second season. The actor's other TV credits include Law & Order, Detroit 1-8-7 and Life on Mars. He is repped by ICM, TMT Entertainment Group and Kraditor & Haber.
During Monday's panel, in which Lucifer was paired with executive producers and talent from Gotham, the show's executive producers defended the casting of Helfer as Ellis' mother despite her only being five years older than Ellis. (Woodside, in turn, is actually five years older than his new TV mom.)
"We were on a search for someone who could make her sons as uncomfortable as possible," said exec producer Ildy Modrovich. "I think we succeeded here."
Exec producer Joe Henderson explained the lack of an age difference from a storytelling perspective. "She didn’t come to Earth in a body. She was a soul in search of a body," he said. "Not a bad body to slum in."
Added Modrovich: "She went through a couple machinations before she ended up in this one."
Lucifer returns for its sophomore season after a strong midseason launch paired with The X-Files on Mondays. Based on the comic book series, the show centers on Lucifer Morningstar, who becomes bored with his life as Lord of Hell and abdicates his throne to live in Los Angeles, where he soon pairs up with an LAPD detective (Lauren German).
Lucifer's second season is set to kick off Monday, Sept. 19, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
