Malia Obama skipped the Democratic National Convention Thursday night to instead attend the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago. People on Twitter are now criticizing the first daughter for missing Hillary Clinton’s historic DNC speech in favor of rocking out. See tweets below.
Footage and photos of Obama at EDM artist Cashmere Cat’s set were posted on social media, and some people were put off by the 18-year-old’s presence at the concert. One user tweeted, “Pretty hilarious that Malia Obama would rather party at #Lolla2016 then be at the DNC supporting women’s history being made.” Another person joked, “Not even Malia Obama can stand Hillary Clinton.”
A couple of users also accused Obama of having little interest in the Democratic presidential nominee, with one writing, “I’m sure Malia Obama will go to the DNC when her mother runs,” and another similarly argued the First Daughter didn’t show up because “it’s not like her dad is running for President again.” Meanwhile, another person said taxpayers should be angry that “secret service takes Malia Obama to Lollapalooza instead of the #DNCinPHL.”
However, there were also many Twitter users who defended Obama and her right to have fun at a concert. One person said, “Dear everyone attacking Malia Obama for going to Lolla during the DNC: I can’t hear you over the sound of how dumb and petty you are.” Another user contended, “It’s kinda creepy that ppl are gawking at a vid of Malia Obama turning up at Lallapalooza. Can’t she just do normal things ppl her age do?” And yet another user similarly expressed, “So what? Can’t she be a normal teen for once?”
