Fox is bulking up on American Grit.
The network has renewed the John Cena military-inspired competition series for a second season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The reality show, which debuted on Fox in April, pushes contestants past their limits to test strength, human spirit and teamwork. The series is currently casting the next group of participants, with an emphasis on everyday individuals who have overcome great odds. Cena will return as host and executive producer along with David George, Brent Montgomery, Adam Sher, Will Nothacker and Simon Thomas. The unscripted series hails from Leftfield Pictures, which recently signed Cena to a development deal.
Season one of American Grit ran for 10 episodes, but an episode count for season two has not yet been revealed. The first season, which wrapped in June, averaged just a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49 in live-plus-three numbers.
The pickup comes at a turning point for Fox's reality slate. The network said goodbye to stalwart American Idol in April and launched a revamped, kid-centered version of So You Think You Can Dance titled The Next Generation this summer. Fox's other unscripted series include MasterChef and MasterChef Junior, Hotel Hell, Hell's Kitchen, Home Free and Mark Burnett's Coupled, which also premiered this year.
It's been a busy year for Cena, who is coming off breakout roles in Trainwreck and Sisters, and recently hosted the ESPYS.
