Montel Williams was wrongly detained in Germany for pot possession. The former talk show host was temporarily held at the Frankfurt Airport by custom agents.

Williams, of course, suffers from multiple sclerosis, and carries marijuana on him for medical treatments. In this case, the weed was found in his carry-on luggage. Since possession is a criminal offense in the German city, Williams was prohibited from leaving the airport and forced to undergo questioning.

He explained, however, that the pot was medicinal, which makes the possession legal, even in Germany. Williams was allowed to call his team back in the U.S., who faxed over proof of his prescription. After the documentary evidence was obtained, Williams was released from custody.

The star was only detained for less than an hour and was never arrested, but to him, the situation illustrates an ongoing issue. Williams’ rep tells TMZ, “Unfortunately this is the reality faced by medical marijuana patients every day all over the world. Today, Montel reaffirms his commitment to fighting for sensible medical marijuana policies across the world and to fighting the stigma he and so many other seriously ill Americans face every day for simply following the advice of their doctor.”

Williams himself has not yet publicly commented on the debacle.
