Stephen Colbert has a problem with the famous song, "Danny Boy," but he has an idea how to fix it just in time for St. Patrick's Day.
The Late Show host honored the Irish tune on Thursday night by re-writing it to be a bit more exciting. But first, he started off the show with a special entrance with an Irish band, bagpipes and all. He even tried out some Irish dancing.
Colbert transitioned into his monologue by singing a bit of "Danny Boy," but stopping because "from there it gets really depressing."
"I don't understand — why does the song have to be so sad?" Colbert asked. "Haven't the Irish been through enough? Famine, wars, Liam Neeson's daughter repeatedly taken!"
In honor of St. Patrick's Day, the host invited Irish tenor Karl Scully to come perform a new version of the famous song, which Colbert called "Danny Boy — with a happy ending." It even includes a fun twist with cryogenically frozen heads.
