Fox is planning a return trip to Gotham.

The network has renewed the drama for a third season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The series, which stars Ben McKenzie, centers on Batman's longtime partner in crime(-solving) years before the Caped Crusader comes to life. In this iteration, Bruce Wayne is still a young boy grappling with his parents' deaths and searching for answers.

Based on the DC Comics origin story for Batman, the drama has added several familiar names from the comics this season including Hugo Strange and Mr. Freeze among many others. Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee's Big Holiday) begins a multi-episode arc on March 21.

The Warner Bros. TV series hails from executive producers Bruno Heller, Danny Cannon and John Stephens.

“It takes a very special team to tell the tales of Gotham. For the past two seasons, Bruno, Danny and John have masterfully honored the mythology of Gotham and brought it to life with depth, emotion and memorable high drama,” Fox Entertainment president David Madden said. “This incredibly talented cast has redefined these iconic characters for a new generation, and we couldn’t be more proud of this show.”

Gotham has proven a dependable performer on Mondays for Fox. The network is preparing to say goodbye to two important parts of its primetime schedule in the next year: American Idol will say farewell in May and the network just announced that Bones will return for a 12-episode final season. In addition to Bones, Fox has already renewed Empire, Scream Queens, The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers for the 2016-17 TV season.

Gotham is one of several superhero small-screen adaptations. The CW recently renewed Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow -- all based on DC Comics properties -- for next season, and ABC recently picked up another season of Agents of SHIELD. CBS also entered the comic book arena last year with another Monday entry, Supergirl.
