After saluting to the "future Presidentress of the United States" while in character, Ilana Glazer tweets her support for the candidate: "Let's go get that primary."
One day after Hillary Clinton was told to smile more after her primary wins, the Democratic presidential candidate could be seen grinning ear to ear as she closed out tonight's episode of Broad City.
Much of Clinton's anticipated cameo on the Comedy Central series had been teased a day earlier, with a clip of stars and creators Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson (who play Ilana Wexler and Abbi Abrams) nearly losing their minds upon meeting Clinton in the flesh. But the full episode provided more context and treated viewers to a day in the life of a fictional Hillary Rodham Clinton campaign worker.
When her temp job as a bike messenger sends her to Clinton's Brooklyn campaign headquarters, an overly excited Ilana — who passionately salutes to photos of Clinton on the walls — "applies" to work on the campaign. "You'll never see her," warns the receptionist.
During an office meeting about calling voters, led by guest star Cynthia Nixon (the episode also saw a guest spot from Alan Alda), Ilana squats on her chair saying "yas, yas, yas" as Nixon's character, Barb, answers common questions they receive: "No, Hillary does not cry at the office," "Yes, Hillary can read a map" and "No, Hillary is not a witch." She also reminds the room that Clinton has won a Grammy.
Ilana takes to calling herself "Ilana Rodham Wexler" and leaves a card on Barb's desk with her new job title: "Communications Liaison for Hillary Clinton, Future Presidentress of the United States."
But when Barb tells Ilana that the volunteer job is unpaid, she quits. Later, Ilana brings Abbi back to her old Clinton stomping grounds, telling her best friend that the air smells "decisive" and like "no bullshit," when Clinton appears.
Walking in slow-motion, Clinton winks twice at the girls, who shake their heads furiously and yell "Yas." "Sorry, we are just so excited!" says Ilana, prompting the response from a smiling Clinton: "It's alright, just take your time."
Clinton thanks Ilana for her help and Abbi introduces herself as a proud "Demo-crat." "You know of me?" asks Ilana, to which Clinton replies, "Well, you're wearing a nametag."
To Clinton's delight, Ilana vows to continue to support the candidate by tweeting once a week, "Vote for Hillary. Yas. Yas. Yas."
Telling them they need to do everything they can to drum up excitement for the campaign, Clinton asks "You know what I'll do?" She then wheels out a waving inflatable tube man. "Look at that. I thought this would be really good for office morale, isn't she great?"
"Of course. We assumed it was a he," says Ilana.
"Oh, no, no. It's a she. It's definitely a she."
The pair each take a shoulder, and the episode ends with Clinton smiling as they embrace.
Though the sketch was written a year ago and before Glazer and Jacobson knew if Clinton would appear, the appearance is especially timely. Yesterday, Twitter erupted after Morning Joe's Joe Scarborough commented on Clinton's facial expressions after her primary victories, saying, "Smile. You just had a big night." Broad City famously made a joke out of the idea of men telling women they should smile more, prompting many to recirculate the popular GIF.
Despite saying that the episode was not a political statement during their SXSW panel last week, Glazer tweeted her support for the candidate after the episode aired, saying, "Let's go get that primary."
For Clinton, who shot the cameo in December, this is her second attempt in two weeks at reaching female voters through TV women. On March 10, Shonda Rhimes teamed with Scandal's Kerry Washington, How to Get Away With Murder's Viola Davis and Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo to endorse Clinton for an ad during ABC's "Thank God It's Thursday" lineup.
