The straight-to-series comedy is being taken out to premium cable networks and streaming services.
Nicole Holofcener is turning her attention to the small screen.
The filmmaker is teaming with Media Rights Capital to write and direct a straight-to-series comedy, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, with Amy Ryan set to star.
While details of the premise and episode count are being kept under wraps, the half-hour series will be the first that Holofcener has developed. While she has worked in TV before — she recently directed episodes of Orange Is the New Black, Inside Amy Schumer, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Togetherness — plans call for her to write and direct the entire first season. She'll focus on prepping the TV series instead of making a feature film her next project.
Ryan is attached to star in the comedy, which insiders say will be in the same vein of Holofcener's films, which include Enough Said and Friends With Money.
The untitled Holofcener comedy follows MRC's standard business model of packaging creators and talent and going straight-to-series before taking projects out to the marketplace. MRC will shop the comedy to premium cable networks (HBO, Showtime, Starz) and streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon).
The Holofcener comedy joins an MRC slate that also includes Netflix's House of Cards and Jason Bateman comedy Ozark; Starz's Blunt Talk and the upcoming The One Percent and Counterpart as well as The Stranger from Damian Szifron.
Ryan, whose credits include Birdman, Gone Baby Gone and Bridge of Spies, will return to the small screen following roles in The Office, Mildred Pierce, In Treatment and The Wire. She's repped by Gersh and Bloom Hergott.
Holofcener is repped by UTA and Jackoway Tyerman.
MRC declined comment.
