Freeform (formerly ABC Family) has canceled comedy Kevin From Work after one season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The single-camera workplace comedy, which wrapped its 10-episode run in October with a series low 120,000 total viewers, starred Noah Reid as a young man who declares his unrequited love for his co-worker Audrey Paige Spara.
Sources tell THR that the options on the cast were picked up two weeks ago as Freeform was attempting to make a deal with Netflix to stream season one in a bid to increase awareness of the series ahead of a potential second season. That deal fell through and the cast was released from their options today.
Written, created and executive produced by Barbie Adler (How I Met Your Mother) the comedy hailed from prolific producer Aaron Kaplan and his Kapital Entertainment (recently canceled Chasing Life and NBC's The Mysteries of Laura) banner and McG's Wonderland Sound & Vision.
Kevin fit into Freeform's sweetspot: the so-called "becomers" experiencing a series of "firsts" — in this case, love.
The decision to cancel the series comes as Freeform, under network president Tom Ascheim, has undergone a massive rebranding with a bid that has included abandoning its former ABC Family moniker as it looks to lure older viewers.
Freeform's current slate includes Baby Daddy, The Fosters, Pretty Little Liars, Recovery Road, Shadowhunters, Stitchers, Switched at Birth, Young & Hungry, Nicki, Guilt, Beyond and anthology Dead of Summer.
