NCIS will be back.
CBS has renewed the procedural for two more seasons, it was announced Monday.
The two-season pickup coincides with star and executive producer Mark Harmon's new two-year overall deal with the network. The renewal will keep the series on the air through season 15 and through 2018. It is unclear if season 15 will be the drama's final season.
In addition to his duties on the flagship series, Harmon also serves as an executive producer on NCIS: New Orleans, along with NCIS showrunner Gary Glasberg. NCIS has spawned two spinoffs, also including veteran NCIS: Los Angeles.
The news also comes as the series prepares to bid farewell to longtime star Michael Weatherly, who has been with the show since its inception. His exit follows that of another longtime star and fan-favorite Cote de Pablo, who left after season 11. Sean Murray, Pauley Perrette, Rocky Carroll, Brian Dietzen, Emily Wickersham and David McCallum also star in the series, which is produced by Belisarius Productions in association with CBS Television Studios.
“It’s extraordinary that in its 13th season and with over 300 episodes to its credit, NCIS continues to excel at such a high level on a global scale,” CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller said in a statement. “It is testimony to an amazing cast, led on and off the screen by the exceptional Mark Harmon, for skillfully bringing this universally appealing team of heroes to life; and to Gary Glasberg and his writers for crafting compelling stories that feature NCIS’s signature blend of mystery, quirk, drama and comedy every single week.”
This isn't the first multi-season renewal for CBS, which famously picked up three seasons of comedy hit The Big Bang Theory back in 2014.
For CBS, keeping NCIS on the air is important not only given the series' continued ratings dominance in its Tuesday timeslot, but also because the network just said goodbye to another long-running procedural, CSI, in September after 15 seasons. Several other veteran CBS series will leave the air this spring, including The Good Wife and Mike & Molly. There are also questions surrounding the future of Person of Interest beyond season five.
