Justina Machado will headline the Latino adaptation of the Norman Lear sitcom, which will premiere on Netflix.
Netflix's One Day at a Time remake has found its leading lady.
Justina Machado (Six Feet Under) is set to star in the Latino reboot of the hit Norman Lear sitcom, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The new multicamera iteration will center on three generations of a Cuban-American family living under one roof. Machado will play Penelope, a recently divorced former military mother navigating a new single life while raising her radical teenaged daughter and socially adept tween son with the "help" of her old-school Cuban-born mother (played by Rita Moreno) and a friends-without-benefits building manager named Schneider. A former Army medical specialist, Penelope now runs a doctor's office and dreams of going to medical school.
Netflix declined to comment.
Machado's role was played by Bonnie Franklin in the original series, which ran from 1975 to 1984 on CBS. The original series also starred Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli as Franklin's two TV daughters.
The all-Latino One Day at a Time reboot finally got the Netflix pickup last month after prolonged talks. Lear is attached as an executive producer, along with How I Met Your Mother alum Gloria Calderon-Kellett and Enlisted's Mike Royce, who are set to co-write and serve as co-showrunners. Michael Garcia will also exec produce, with Brent Miller on board as a co-exec producer. The comedy is produced by Act III Productions, Snowpants Productions and Small Fish Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television.
Machado's other credits include ER, Private Practice and USA Network's forthcoming cartel drama Queen of the South.
