Fox leads a night of mixed originals on the broadcast networks.
American Idol is really holding up in its final season. Its ratings have been comparatively modest, for sure, but the Fox competition is seeing better week-to-week retention than it has in recent years.
Wednesday's episode averaged a steady 2.5 rating among adults 18-49 and 9.6 million viewers, topping the evening's broadcast outings by both counts. With a new episode of Hell's Kitchen (1.4 adults) shifting into Second Chance's time slot, Fox secured a nightly win in the key demo — continuing an atypically strong week that started with football and the two-night launch of The X-Files.
The race for second place went to CBS, which had new and steady episodes of its entire Wednesday roster: 2 Broke Girls (1.6 adults), Mike & Molly (1.6 adults), Criminal Minds (2.0 adults) and Code Black (1.3 adults).
ABC aired a new American Crime after two hours of comedy repeats. The lack of original lead-in didn't dampen the drama, steady with a 0.9 rating in the key demo. American Crime's first round of live-plus-seven returns for the season have the premiere rising 67 percent to a 2.0 rating with adults 18-49.
With repeats on NBC, the only other new outings were on the CW. Arrow (1.1 adults) and Supernatural (0.7 adults) were dead even with their most recent showings.
