Star Wars: The Force Awakens is continuing to break box office records in its second weekend, this time over the Christmas holiday. As Gossip Cop reported, the year’s most anticipated film finally debuted last week, and earned the highest-grossing opening in box office history.
Now with Christmas on Friday, the film had the biggest Christmas Day in history, with $49.3 million in ticket sales. It also reached $1 billion faster than any other movie, achieving the milestone in just 12 days. That, of course, all led to Star Wars: The Force Awakens taking the top spot with $153.3 million in sales.
Coming in a distant, though respectable, second place was Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s new comedy Daddy’s Home, which earned $38.8 million. Taking third was Joy with $17.5 million. Securing the fourth and fifth positions were Sisters and Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip, with $13.9 million and $12.7 million, respectively.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Will Smith’s Concussion, with $11 million in ticket sales for sixth place, followed by The Big Short in seventh, with $10.5 million. Point Break took eighth with $10.2 million, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 nabbed ninth place with $5.3 million. Just making the Top 10 was Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, with a box office of $4.5 million.
