Adam Sandler made his first-ever appearance on the “Howard Stern Show” on Tuesday, sitting down for a very revealing interview in which he covered everything from his early days on “Saturday Night Live” to his career today. Gossip Cop has compiled some of the highlights!
Although he was a fan favorite on the sketch comedy show, Sandler was fired from “SNL” in 1995. Stern asked if it was producer Lorne Michaels who gave him the ax, but Sandler said, “He didn’t. NBC fired me,” adding, “I think they just needed to make a move and get rid of… I was known as sophomoric. I think they had new brass, new guys were running it. They wanted to start over.” Sandler went on to say there are no hard feelings between him and Michaels, and he has an open invitation to return to “SNL” whenever he wants.
Stern then asked Sandler about his frequent collaborations with Drew Barrymore, who the actor credits for helping him become a romantic leading man following the success of The Wedding Singer. “Drew liking me made it seem like girls were allowed to like me in movies,” Sandler explained. As Gossip Cop reported, Barrymore appeared on the “Howard Stern Show” last month and had similarly kind things to say about Sandler.
Sandler then confirmed the rumor that he had turned down the role of the Bear Jew in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, explaining that he “wanted to do it, but Judd [Apatow] was shooting Funny People at the same time.” Sandler admitted he felt bad about having to pass on the movie and losing the opportunity to play a “badass Jew.”
Stern also brought up the fact that Sandler often puts his friends, such as Rob Schneider, David Spade and Chris Rock, into many of his movies, and asked if he felt like he had to “take care” of them. Sandler insisted he doesn’t cast friends as a favor, but rather because it’s fun working with them, and he genuinely believes they make his movies better.
Finally, Sandler discussed his unconventional deal with Netflix in which his next four movies will premiere exclusively on the streaming service. The first of those films, The Ridiculous Six, is currently available. The actor felt he made a good decision by skipping a theatrical release on his next few movies, since it gives him full creative freedom, without the stress of competing at the box office.
