Another popular comic book hero is eyeing a leap to TV.
Johnny Knoxville and NBC are working on a TV adaptation of Hawaiian Dick, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Created by writer B. Clay Moore and artist Steven Griffin, Hawaiian Dick first launched in 2002. The series follows a stateside cop, Byrd, who is exiled to Hawaii and becomes immersed in a dark and dangerous paradise. There have been three installments so far, with the next edition set for release in 2016.
The project is described as a one-hour comedic action series that will mix procedural, humor and supernatural elements. Paul Lovett & David Elliott (GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra) will pen the script, and exec produce. Knoxville, 3 Arts' Michael Rotenberg, David Janollari (Six Feet Under) and Eric Gitter (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) will exec produce. Universal Television will produce.
This is latest in a long string of attempts by Knoxville to bring Hawaiian Dick to life. New Line first optioned the material for development in 2004 as a potential starring vehicle for the Jackass star. The option was renewed in 2006 with new writers, but a movie was never made.
Knoxville previously had a first-look deal at ABC, where he sold a semi-autobiographical family comedy last pilot season. On the producing side, he has the Evel Kneival docu Being Evel, which premiered at Sundance.
This isn't NBC's only comic book project. In August, NBC gave a pilot production commitment to DC Comics' Powerless, which hails from A to Z creator Ben Queen and Warner Bros. TV.
