Netflix is poised to explore the late 18th century fur trade.

The streaming service has picked up six episodes of action-adventure drama series Frontier and tapped Game of Thrones favorite Jason Momoa to star, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The drama will premiere in 2016.

The drama is created by Peter Blackie and Rob Blackie (Republic of Doyle). Jeff Fierson and Brad Peyton (San Andreas) are on board to produce, with the latter set to direct. Alex Patrick and John Vatcher (Republic of Doyle) are also set to exec produce. The series is produced by Take the Shot Production and Factory Backwards, in association with Discovery, which will serve as the exclusive Canadian broadcaster, and Netflix. It is slated to start shooting this month in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Cornwall in the U.K.

Landon Liboiron, Alun Armstrong, Allan Hawco and Zoe Boyle round out the cast of the series, which was unveiled by Discovery Canada at MIPTV. In Canada, the series will air on Discovery and stream on Netflix in 2018.

The drama is told from multiple perspectives and set in a world where business negotiations are frequently resolved with hatchet fights. Frontier will also explore the delicate relations between Native tribes and Europeans that can spark bloody conflicts.

Momoa will star as Declan Harp, an ambitious, confident, charismatic and untamed man with a reputation for being a ruthless trader, driven by lust and revenge.

Frontier joins a rapidly growing roster of original scripted programming on Netflix that includes a new season of critical hit Black Mirror, Orange Is the New Black, Fuller House, Bloodline, Longmire, Marco Polo, Narcos, The Get Down, Grace and Frankie, The Crown, BoJack Horseman, Between, Daredevil, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and more.

For Momoa, the role marks his latest TV foray following SundanceTV's The Red Road, which recently completed production on its second and final season. On the film side, Momoa's credits include Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Jutsice. He's repped by APA, LINK Entertainment and Edelstein Laird.

For Peyton, meanwhile, Frontier marks a reunion for the director with his cohorts from CBC Television dramedy Republic of Doyle. Repped by CAA and Lichter Grossman, his credits include the Journey franchise and upcoming Rampage.
