She’s come a long way from the Creek. Katie Holmes gets raw and gritty in a trailer for her upcoming drama Touched With Fire, playing a young woman who accidentally checks herself into a psychiatric hospital.

In the film, Holmes, 36, plays Emily, a woman who struggles with bipolar disorder and meets fellow manic-depressive Marco (Luke Kirby), while both are checked into the hospital. The pair fall head-over-heels in love, though a series of trying events threatens to keep them apart.

At one point in the trailer, Holmes scribbles manically on a pad of paper while reciting poetry, telling her mother, Sara (Christine Lahti), that she’s just “trying to figure out” who she is.
Kirby’s character, Marco, a poet who goes by his pen name Luna, is similarly in a bind as his outer world falls to pieces.

“We of the craft are all crazy,” he tells Holmes’ Emily.

The Dawson's Creek alum most recently made headlines after former Scientologist Leah Remini said Holmes’ statement, that she “regret[s] having upset Leah in the past and wish[es] her only the best in the future,” made her cry.

“I’m smiling because it almost makes me want to cry,” Remini told Good Morning America on Nov. 2. “It makes me emotional because at the time that Katie and this particular crew were writing reports, it caused me a lot of time and pain in my family, being reprogrammed. So at the time I was fighting with her — I guess for lack of a better word — within the church, and now I know really what she was going through.”
Holmes, who most recently appeared on Showtime’s Ray Donovan, is set to reprise her 2011 role as Jacqueline Kennedy in TV mini series The Kennedys After Camelot, due out in 2016.
