Stephen Colbert weighed in on the new Starbucks holiday cup design -- or lack thereof.
"Yes, they got rid of the Christian religious symbols like snowflakes and snowmen. I think we all remember the story of when Baby Jesus was visited by the Three Wise Frosties," he joked during Wednesday's episode of The Late Show. "I can see why people might be all frothed up about this. Now, Starbucks is completely devoid of any trace of the holiday besides the Christmas tree ornaments, advent calendar, CDs of Christmas music, Christmas-themed gift cards, Christmas cookies and giant displays of their Christmas Blend coffee."
He added of the relatively plain design, "It's just red and green, which obviously could represent anything: Different types of bell peppers, two-thirds of a stoplight, a frog that was run over by a bus -- anything!"
After screening a video of a patron who "tricked" Starbucks employee to write "Merry Christmas" on the cup by claiming the holiday greeting is his name, the host then debuted his version of Christmas coffee cup.
"Don't fight this: Give the customers a cup so crammed with Christmas, they'll be picking tinsel out of their Yule log for months," Colbert said of his elaborate design, complete with a manger scene, ornaments, tinsel and sound effects -- and an entire Christmas tree. "What a festive way to start my day."
