The series ran for three seasons on A&E before the cable network opted not to pick up a fourth season in August 2014 despite strong viewership. After petitions and much chatter online, Netflix officially revived the series three months later. The 10-episode fourth season premiered in early September on Netflix.

In addition to Longmire, Netflix has saved canceled series like The Killing, as well as reviving long-dormant franchises such as Full House, which will premiere next year as a sequel series of sorts titled Fuller House.

Longmire joins Netflix's growing slate of original dramas that also includes House of Cards,BloodlineMarco PoloSense8BetweenNarcosClub de Cuervos and Marvel series including Daredevil and the forthcoming Jessica Jones.
