The project is based on the best-selling young adult novel '13 Reasons Why.'
Selena Gomez is coming back to the small screen.
Netflix has given a straight-to-series pickup to a project exec produced by the singer and former Disney Channel star, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The series is based on the best-selling young adult novel 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. The series, which was created and written by Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey, has been picked up for 13 episodes.
Before Netflix, Universal picked up the option for 13 Reasons Why in 2012 in hopes of turning it into a starring vehicle for Gomez. The novel centers on a shy California high school student who finds a box of cassette tapes on his doorstep. The tapes were recorded by Hanna Barker, a classmate he had feelings for who committed suicide. The tapes are sent with instructions to pass them on to a list of students like a chain letter, and the tapes explain to 13 people how they played a role in her death.
Since her breakout series, The Wizards of Waverly Place, ended in 2012, Gomez has turned her attention to films such as Spring Breakers, Hotel Translyvania and its sequel, as well as the upcoming Neighbors 2. On the music front, she has sold more than 22 million singles worldwide thanks to hits like "The Heart Wants What It Wants." Her latest album, Revival, debuted atop the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Gomez will exec produce with Mandy Teefey, Kristel Laiblin and Anonymous Content.
The series 13 Reasons Why joins Netflix's quickly growing slate of original dramas including House of Cards, Bloodline, Marco Polo, Sense8, Between, Narcos, Club de Cuervos and Marvel series including Daredevil and the forthcoming Jessica Jones.
