Fox and Ed Helms are ready to get Weird.

The network has handed out a script commitment to comedy Weird Like Us, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The single-camera entry revolves around a pair of biodiesel-driving, backyard beekeeping, counterculture rebels who face a family crisis when their own children rebel — by going mainstream.

Emmy winner Max Werner (The Colbert Show) will pen the script. Helms will exec produce the Universal Television comedy via his studio-based Pacific Electric Picture Co. banner alongside exec vp production and development Mike Falbo.

For Pacific Electric, this marks the company's latest sale. The banner also sold Happy Trails from Phil Trail to NBC, just wrapped the TruTV pilot Jake and Amir and next are prepping the animated presentation Rudy for Comedy Central.

Werner, repped by WME and Anonymous, also counts feature Fun Size for Paramount.

Helms is repped by UTA, Principato Young and Schreck Rose.

Weird Like Us marks a key off-network sale for Universal Television, who also are behind Fox comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

New takes on family comedies have emerged as one of development season's five biggest trends this year among the broadcast networks.
