Bette Midler thinks Justin Bieber is “terrific,” and fully supports his comeback.

As Gossip Cop recently reported, Midler slammed Bieber’s father earlier this month after Jeremy Bieber joked about his son’s penis photos on Twitter. The music icon tweeted, “.@justinbieber dad tweeted he’s proud of his son’s penis size. I think the biggest d*ck in this situation is the dad who abandoned his son.” Since then, Bieber himself has actually defended his father’s off-color message.

Midler now tells People that she received “pretty positive” feedback in response to her tweet. And insists it all stemmed from love and concern for Bieber. “He’s coming from a long way back. I think he’s doing well,” she says. “I saw him on the MTV VMAs, and I thought he was terrific.”

Referring to Bieber breaking down in tears at the end of his performance, Midler reveals, “In the end thing when he finally got down from that harness, I mean, I was so there with him.” She goes on to explain, “Because I know exactly what he was going through, and of course I felt a little maternal because I’m practically his great-grandmother’s age, but I felt for him. I really felt for him.”

Midler also has some words of advice for Bieber and this new generation of stars. “Don’t drink too much. Don’t play around too much. Don’t carry on too much, because it’s really hard on the voice,” she says.

The singer-actress continues, “You want to be able to show up so you don’t get a bad rap. Certain things have a way of following you to your grave, so mind your Ps and Qs. It’s crazy nowadays when you can be caught out at any minute. I haven’t been out of the house in seven years!”

In fact, Midler expresses a distaste for today’s red carpet culture, telling the magazine, “If you just have to walk a red carpet and pose and wear high heels and sit in hair and makeup for two hours, I don’t think it’s that much fun. I mean, it’s not that much fun for me anymore.”

“They put on a great show,” Midler says when asked about Taylor Swift and her so-called “squad.” “Taylor and her girls look fantastic and like they’re having a blast. Good for them.” She adds, “I don’t have a celebrity squad. It’s interesting they can all get their schedules coordinated because I don’t know anybody who can.”
