Back to the Future Day: Michael J. Fox, Lea Thompson, Christopher Lloyd Reunite

The future has arrived! Thirty years after the release of Back to the Future, the film's stars Michael J. Fox, Lea Thompson, and Christopher Lloyd reunited on the Today show on Tuesday, Oct. 21, to recall their experience on the set of the beloved, iconic trilogy and celebrate "Back to the Future Day."

The date, Oct. 21, 2015, is significant to fans of the trilogy, because it's the day that Fox's character Marty McFly travels to in Back to the Future II.

Lloyd, 76, who perfectly portrayed the kooky Doc Brown in the movies, remained in character as he arrived at Rockefeller Center's plaza in a DeLorean. The veteran actor reiterated on Tuesday that it was love at first sight for him and Fox.

"We had a chemistry from the instant that we walked on set," Lloyd told Matt Lauer. "We were so happy to see each other. It never had to be manufactured, nobody had to say, 'Work for this kind of chemistry.' It was just there. It was innate. And wonderful."

"I came into the project late," Fox, now 54, added. "There was another actor for nine weeks... It happened so fast. I kind of discovered it in the process of doing it. And I was like, 'Wow, these guys really know their stuff.' It was an amazing experience."

Thompson, meanwhile, laughed off her outrageous character. "It was a great script! I always had a strange sense of humor..." the actress, 54, said with a smile. "It was pretty much why the film was rejected definitely by Disney. I just thought it was a crazy story and the perfect script." (In the movie, Thompson played Lorraine McFly, who accidentally fell in love with her, ahem, son when he traveled back to the '50s.)

All three stars were visibly nostalgic about their experience working on the franchise. "Here we are 30 years later, and it doesn't seem to have lost any momentum," Lloyd said, while Fox called his work on the trilogy "a privilege that I can't be more grateful for."
