Travis Barker is finally opening up about exactly what happened during the deadly plane crash that almost took his life in 2008. Barker’s just released memoir Can I Say, recounts what it was like for the drummer to be one of the two survivors of the plane crash that left him with burns over 60 percent of his body. See the video below.

In 2008, the plane carrying Barker, best friend DJ AM, as well as Barker’s security and assistants, crashed just minutes after takeoff in Columbia, S.C. Barker and DJ AM were the only survivors of the crash that took the lives of the plane’s four other passengers, including both pilots. On Tuesday, “Good Morning America” aired an interview with Barker, in which he revealed what he experienced just moments after the jet crashed. “The plane’s on fire and my hands are on fire, so I unbuckle my seat belt and I jump right into the jet, which holds all the fuel,” he said. “I basically ignite my whole body on fire. I’m so soaked in jet fuel, there’s nothing I can do to put the fire out.”

Barker goes on to describe the panic he felt after taking in the horrifying scene. “I’m completely nude at this point… I’m running, grabbing my testicles, my genitals, because, I don’t know why, and then we realize, you know, we’re out of the plane and… the plane explodes.”

After the crash, Barker spent more than four months in burn centers recovering from the trauma, and even considered taking his own life to end the excruciating pain. Just a year later, Barker suffered the devastating blow of the death of his best friend DJ AM, who lost his battle with drug and alcohol addiction.

Through it all, Barker says he was able to pull through with the love from his children, Landon and Alabama. While the drummer has not been on a plane since that fateful day, he’s not ruling it out forever. “I tell my children, ‘When you’re ready to fly, I’m ready to fly.’ So, if my son came to me and said, ‘Dad, let’s fly to Hawaii,’ or, ‘Dad, let’s go to Australia,’ I’m in Australia.”
