Carey Mulligan is labeling the film industry “sexist” in a new interview. The actress feels Hollywood simply isn’t making enough movies about women.
Mulligan is currently promoting the upcoming drama Suffragette, which tells the true story of the early feminist movement and the women who pioneered the fight for equal rights. Mulligan stars as Maud Watts, a housewife who risked losing custody of her children after becoming a women’s rights activist. Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter also co-star.
But Mulligan feels her movie is a rarity, and for the most part “we have a sexist film industry, and stories about women are largely untold.” The actress backs up her claims by explaining how difficult it was to get Suffragette financed. “This is one that’s fallen by the wayside because of that,” she says. “I think a lot of people have sat around tables in various production offices and decided it wasn’t financially viable.”
Mulligan also went on to reveal how a lack of strong female roles led her to take an 18-month break from acting following 2013’s The Great Gatsby. “That was mainly because there wasn’t anything that interesting to work on,” she explains. “You either make a lot of compromises and play roles you’re not very keen on, or you have to wait.”
However, Mulligan understands that most working actresses don’t have the luxury of turning down roles they don’t like. “I’ve been incredibly lucky in getting the jobs I’ve done, and I did enough work in the earlier part of my career to allow me to sit around for a bit,” she admits. “But that’s a privileged position. Not many people get to do that.”
