Clooney Slams ‘Idiotic’ Trump – ARTICLE

George Clooney didn't take the politically correct route when sharing his thoughts on Donald Trump recently.

"Clearly, what he said is idiotic, of course it's idiotic," the star told reporters at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday, when asked for his perspective on Trump's controversial immigration remarks.

The Republican presidential hopeful was widely criticized for referring to undocumented Mexican immigrants as "rapists" and "criminals" while announcing his candidacy in June. Despite his polarizing persona, the real estate mogul has, well, trumped his competitors in poll after poll.

"Who'd have thought Donald Trump would be at 30 percent?" George asked. Trump may be defying current expectations, but the Hollywood power player thinks the trend is fleeting.

"Anyone who says intolerant words should be laughed at, and I think that's what history will do," George said.

The producer was at the Toronto festival in support of his new film "Our Brand is Crisis," which stars Sandra Bullock as "Calamity" Jane Bodine, an in-demand campaign strategist. The role, based on real-life political consultant Bob Shrum, was initially meant for George, but got rewritten for a woman once his "Gravity" co-star expressed interest.

George acknowledged the movie's convenient timing, but said he and the filmmakers weren't necessarily intending to align with the electoral climate.

"You know, it ends up working out very well for the film, but that wasn't, you know, we weren't that good," he said.

"Our Brand is Crisis" may serve as a political drama on the surface, but George explained that its themes translate into deeper territory.

"We weren't looking at this as strictly politics," he said. "We're looking at this as a look into the human condition."

Sandy wasn't as serious in her comments, joking that she and George aren't above the use of emotional ploys to promote their film. Like her ruthless character, she said, she's willing to do whatever it takes to secure votes.

"If we need to manipulate the public by crying, I'll do it," the Oscar winner said, poking fun of her pal and colleague.

"George cries all the time," she added.
