The new footage reveals Sam and Dean turn to God for help in defeating season 11's villain, The Darkness.
Supernatural is going back to the beginning. Or rather, even before that.
When the series returns for season 11, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) will find themselves facing The Darkness, a big bad that is so mysterious and so old, it predates biblical times. That means that not even their angel friend Castiel (Misha Collins) or their demon "friend" Crowley (Mark Sheppard) will know how to tackle the issues at hand.
The CW just released the first trailer for season 11, and it shows a beaten and bloody Sam blaming himself and attempting to reach out to God for help in battling The Darkness. Although the idea of God's existence has been teased on the show in prior seasons, with many fans believing that prophet Chuck (Rob Benedict) has taken up the big title himself, it has never been proven that there is a God. Will season 11 finally introduce the heavenly boss?
"We're really proud of last season. We had a lot of intensely personal character stories," executive producer Jeremy Carver said at Comic-Con. "This year, we have more of an epic feel with a big bad, and a quest for the brothers to unite on. I think it's a special big bad we have this year. It's a pre-biblical story that's never been told. I think it's going to be a fun, epic feel. And most importantly, I think the brothers are going to be united in their need to take this thing down."
Both Ackles and Padalecki were excited about the prospect of seeing Sam and Dean on the same page and not fighting like they have been for the past few seasons.
"It's been a while since we've seen Sam and Dean in a good place," Padalecki told The Hollywood Reporter. "And this year they're going to be facing The Darkness together head-on, and I think the fans are really going to love that."
Ackles agreed, adding, "It's fun for us to get to play the lighter side of their brotherly relationship after playing it so dark for a while."
Carver also teased that fans will see the return of a few fan-favorites this season, though he wouldn't reveal who. "They're coming back in a surprising way," he said.
