Jordin Sparks is not happy that an interview she did with Billboard about her music career was promoted with a headline about Jason Derulo. See photos below.
On Monday, Billboard published a story online with the headline, “Jordin Sparks on the ‘Pain and Confusion’ From Her Breakup With Jason Derulo.” The article was similarly tweeted on the outlet’s Twitter account with “Jordin Sparks on the ‘pain and confusion’ from her breakup with Jason Derulo.” But while Sparks indeed discusses the split in the interview, most of her quotes are actually about her new album, which is her first in six years.
The article is structured in a fill-in-the-blank format, with Sparks giving answers for queries like “my biggest comeback fear,” “my musical hero,” and “my most sentimental new song.” It’s only for the last one, “my rebound,” that Sparks alludes to Derulo, saying, “People think that a celebrity breakup is different, and it is in the way that it’s public. But you still feel the same sort of pain and confusion. I just had to deal with it. And I played Big Sean’s ‘I Don’t F*ck With You’ multiple times a day!”
Sparks apparently felt that focusing on the part about Derulo misrepresented the entirety of her quotes, and she let Billboard know on Twitter, writing, “I made a better headline 4 you! MT @billboard: Jordin Sparks on her biggest comeback fear ‘the landscape has changed.'” Sparks’ preferred headline very clearly indicates the story is about her career, and not her love life.
Billboard‘s online post notes that “this story originally appeared in the Aug. 29 issue of Billboard,” but it’s unclear if the print version was paired with a sensational headline as well. The outlet has not responded to Spark’s tweet, nor has it changed the headline and tweet. See screengrabs below. TELL US: What do you think of Sparks calling out Billboard?
