Demi Lovato gives Wilmer Valderrama credit for helping her through her “issues,” opening up about how he wouldn’t “enable” her drug addictions during a new interview. Listen below.
Lovato sat down for a chat on “The Kyle and Jackie O Show” on Tuesday, during which Kyle was surprised to find out Lovato and Valderrama are a couple. “A lot of people don’t [know],” she acknowledged. “Like, I’ll post a picture on Instagram and all the comments are like, ‘They’re dating?!’ Yeah! It’s been years!”
The singer went on to admit, “There were some moments, like off and on, when I was struggling with my issues and things like that.” Asked if Valderrama would “drop” her at her “worst times,” Lovato explained, “No, what he would do is he wouldn’t enable me. So he’d say, ‘I can’t be around if you’re not going to get yourself together.'”
Lovato said that made her “fight” for both her health and the relationship. “Luckily, it was enough for me to keep holding on to. He’s a very, very good guy,” she shared. Indeed, as Gossip Cop previously reported, the star celebrated three years of sobriety last month, and said she “wouldn’t be alive today” if it wasn’t for Valderrama, who paid tribute to her in honor of the anniversary.
The “Kyle and Jackie O” interview took place in Australia, where the former “Sonny with a Chance” star is in the midst of a new world tour. And Valderrama isn’t far from her mind, with Lovato expressing her long-distance love for him on Instagram last week (see photo above). “#FBF to 4 1/2 years ago and yet all this time later… I still cry when I leave him for tour and I still get butterflies just thinking about him,” she wrote. “You’re magical Wilmer… I love and miss you.”
