“Girls” star Jemima Kirke had an abortion in college, and the actress opens up it in a new public service announcement for the Center for Reproductive Rights. Watch the video below.

Kirke is now a mother of two, but in 2007, when her then-boyfriend impregnated her, she was not ready to have a baby. She explains, “I wasn’t sure that I wanted to be attached to this person for the rest of my life. My life just was not conducive to raising a healthy, happy child. I just didn’t feel it was fair. So I decided to get an abortion.”

The procedure happened at a Planned Parenthood, and Kirke goes into detail about her experience, even explaining why she opted to do it without anesthesia to save some money. She says she’s always believed women should be able to talk “freely” about reproductive issues, but that it’s not always the case.

“I still see shame and embarrassment around terminating pregnancies,” says Kirke. She talks about her own daughters, and how she hopes that by the time they’re old enough to reproduce, “the political issues surrounding their bodies were not there anymore.” Watch the video below, and tell us what you think.
