True Detective season 2 is almost here! In anticipation of the new run of episodes, which premiere Sunday, June 21 at 9 p.m. ET, HBO has finally released the first trailer featuring new leads Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Taylor Kitsch -- and they all look beautifully miserable while mournful music plays. So, just like season 1, then!
The first season of the HBO hit starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana cop partners embroiled in a murder investigation over the course of two decades, with McConaughey's Rust Cohle emerging as a fan favorite character thanks to his frequent pontification on philosophy and the nature of time. (It's a flat circle, you may have heard.)
Like the first, season 2's self-contained story will run for eight episodes, all written by creator Nic Pizzolatto. The first two installments of season 2 were directed by Fast & Furious 3 through 6 mastermind Justin Lin.

The just-released season 2 trailer and promo shots don't reveal much in the way of plot, but they do provide the first glimpse at Farrell's epic mustache and a lot of intense eye contact. According to an HBO press release, the four leads will converge following a bizarre murder in the California desert.

Here's the first official information about the quartet's characters, according to HBO's release: "Colin Farrell is Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective in the all-industrial City of Vinci, LA County. Vince Vaughn plays Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his life’s work, while his wife and closest ally (Kelly Reilly), struggles with his choices and her own. Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective often at odds with the system she serves, while Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol who discovers a crime scene which triggers an investigation involving three law enforcement groups, multiple criminal collusions, and billions of dollars."
