Are the Bluths coming back for more?
Arrested Development executive producer Brian Grazer told Bill Simmons on the B.S. Report podcast Tuesday that 17 new episodes of the cult classic are in development. "I love Arrested Development, but it was never a huge thing," said Grazer. "But people are loyal to it. We're going to do another 17 episodes, so stay tuned for Arrested Development."
However, it is unclear if Netflix will be involved with the new season. Grazer did not mention the streaming service in his interview, and the company declined to comment on the new episodes. "Everyone involved has expressed a desire to do more episodes, but we have nothing firm to announce at this time," said a rep for 20th Century Fox, which produces Arrested Development through Grazer's Imagine Entertainment banner.
Netflix brought back Arrested Development for a fourth season in 2013 after seven years off the air. The entire nine-person ensemble returned for season four, which consisted of 15 episodes. At the time, creator Mitchell Hurwitz said that season four was just the beginning of the critical darling's second act.
"[It] was always designed to be the first act of this movie, three-act structure — or trilogy, when I was trying to make it as a movie trilogy," said Hurwitz on KCRW. "Without question, I love these characters and I love these people, and it would be just a privilege to do more of them or to make a movie, but we're not there yet."
Hurwitz signed a multiyear deal with Netflix in 2014.
An Emmy winner for best comedy series in 2004, Arrested Development originally ran on Fox from 2003-2006.
