A man was arrested on Monday after throwing a banana peel on stage during Dave Chappelle’s stand-up comedy performance in Sante Fe. Christian Englander was taken into custody and charged with battery and disorderly conduct following the incident at The Lensic Performing Arts Center. The whole thing is kind of weird.
According to the police, the drama started after Chappelle saw an audience member sketching in a book and asked for his name. After the guy responded, “Johnny Appleseed,” Chappelle is said to have cracked some jokes about the name. Englander, the man’s friend, was allegedly upset by what he considered to be Chappelle’s “racist” jokes and hit him in the leg with the banana peel. Chappelle jokingly ranted about the situation from the stage. Listen to the explicit audio below.
Both Englander, who admitted to throwing the peel, and his friend were intoxicated. Englander was escorted from the venue by security personnel before being taken to jail. Chappelle pressed charges because Englander seemed to have no remorse and the comedian reportedly felt the altercation was “racially motivated.” The assailant was held without bond behind bars.
