Jake Gyllenhaal shows an unbelievable physical and emotional transformation in the first trailer for his new boxing movie, Southpaw. Watch below.

As Gossip Cop reported back in November, Gyllenhaal completely transformed his body for the role of a down-and-out junior middleweight champion forced to make a big comeback after tragedy strikes. The Oscar-nominated actor participated in intense training that added 15 pounds of muscle to his frame and left him incredibly ripped. The makeover was startling, and fans were shocked when an intensely striking still photo from the film was released last fall.

But now the new trailer gives a fuller picture, showing Gyllenhaal as Billy “The Great” Hope, whose wife, played by Rachel McAdams, urges him to leave boxing behind. When Billy’s volatile nature leads to deadly consequences, he goes on a downward spiral, losing custody of their daughter, and must fight his way back to redemption. Starring in the movie alongside Gyllenhaal and McAdams are Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent, with additional appearances from Naomie Harris, Rita Ora, and real-life boxer Victor Ortiz.

“Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter developed the story and co-wrote the screenplay. Training Day’s Antoine Fuqua directed the project, which is slated to hit theaters on July 31. Eminem, who premiered the trailer on his YouTube page, is working on the film’s soundtrack, and some of his new music can be heard towards the end of the clip.
