This video of 24-year-old musician Axel Winter was taken in Sydney's Pitt Street Mall last Saturday, before the city's Mardi Gras parade.
Winter subsequently explained on Facebook that he was "taking a stand for equality".
In an interview with the Independent, he said:
He was saying some very demeaning things, like "today, God hates you the most if you are a homosexual." "I then proceeded to take a stand, so I took my gear over behind him and asked the crowd to ignore his words of hate and come and sing some words of love.
