The Salvation Army is using the infamous white and gold/black and blue dress to call attention to domestic violence in a powerful and chilling new ad. See below.

On Friday, the Salvation Army of South Africa tweeted a photo of a battered and bruised woman wearing a white and gold version of the much-debated dress, and asked, “Why is it so hard to see black and blue?” The text on the ad further reads, “The only illusion is if you think it was her choice. One in 6 women are victims of abuse. Stop abuse against women.”

As Gossip Cop reported, the colors of the dress dominated the Internet over the last week, as people argued whether it was black and blue or white and gold. In actuality, it’s the former, but illusions in the photograph online made it appear white and gold for some people, who adamantly swore the outfit was not black and blue. The Salvation Army has now taken a seemingly frivolous question, and made it about something of far more consequence.

The advertisement is being widely-praised on Twitter, and the official @SalvationArmySA account retweeted some of the positive feedback, which included one person saying it is “the only good appropriation of #TheDress.” Others deemed the ad “brilliant” and “clever,” though some suggested male abuse victims should not be overlooked.

Interestingly, the Salvation Army also retweeted some criticism, perhaps to draw further attention to the issue. Among the negative tweets was one calling out the charitable organization for spending money on an ad. Another person even replied saying, “Still looks gold to me.” Check out the full advertisement below, and tell us what you think.
