Gabi Finalyson is a 15-year-old student at Lone Peak High School in Utah. She found what she thought was the perfect dress for a recent school dance, having been inspired by Aubrey Hepburn. But school officials felt otherwise, forcing Finalyson to cover herself with a winter coat because the dress violated the school’s dress code. Now the story has gone viral. Watch the video below.
The teen was one of four girls whose wardrobe was too hot for administrators to handle, and debate has erupted over the fairness of the dress code, which states: “Formals, backless dresses and/or tops may not extend beyond the bottom of the shoulder blades. Girls’ dresses and tops must have a 2″ minimum strap on each shoulder. Shawls, boleros and other shrugs are acceptable if worn over the dress at all times. Cleavage covered.”
Her straps actually DID meet the requirement, but it didn’t seem to matter. “Somehow my shoulders are sexualized,” Finalyson told a local news station. “Like it’s my responsibility to make sure the boys’ thoughts are not unclean.” She adds, “Maybe instead of teaching girls they should cover themselves up, we should be teaching boys that we’re not just sex objects that they can look at.”
