‘Whiplash’ Star J.K. Simmons to Host ‘Saturday Night Live’

J.K. Simmons is set to host Saturday Night Live on Jan. 31, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

It's the first time Simmons has hosted the NBC sketch-comedy show, although his IMDb credits list him as having appeared on a 1999 episode hosted by Jerry Seinfeld alongside three of his The Wire co-stars, who were playing their characters from the show.

The Whiplash star is having a big year, having already earned a Golden Globe Award along with an Oscar nomination for his role as the abusive music teacher to Miles Teller's student drummer.

Simmons, a veteran character actor, also is known for roles in Growing Up Fisher, The Closer and Law & Order.

The musical guest on the Jan. 31 episode will be D'Angelo, who recently surprised fans with his first album in nearly 15 years.
