Three months after Justin Bieber and Karl Lagerfeld caused an online buzz when they hinted to a collaboration, their secret project has finally been revealed. The Chanel mastermind photographed and interviewed Bieber for V’s new Music Issue, which, as Gossip Cop reported, also features FKA Twigs and Sam Smith, among other stars.
Back in October, Bieber posted several Instagram photos of himself with Lagerfeld, and teased raw images from an apparent shoot (see below). “Big things coming with my friend @KarlLagerfeld,” the singer wrote at the time. The finished pictures, in which Bieber is shirtless, now appear in V, alongside the interview.
Lagerfeld interestingly asks Bieber what his career would have been like without the Internet, as YouTube kicked off his rise to fame. “The Internet has been a huge part of my career. I was discovered on YouTube,” says Bieber. “I use Twitter, Instagram, Shots, and Fahlo to communicate with my fans on a daily basis. Things would be totally different without it. I definitely wouldn’t be able to have the personal relationship I have with my fans without social media.”
That relationship dates back more than five years now, and Bieber recalls the first time he felt successful. “I performed at a water park in New York at the very beginning of my career and thousands of girls showed up to see me in the rain,” he remembers. Performing live remains Bieber’s “favorite part of [his] job,” and he reveals he’ll be back on stage sooner than later. “I’m going to start working on a new album and a tour for 2015,” says the performer. “I took the last year off and I’m excited to get back to work.”
And music isn’t all that Bieber has in mind. Asked about his “career evolving” and “unfilled ambitions,” he tells Lagerfeld, “I’m still young. I still have so many personal and professional goals I want to achieve. I want to keep creating music for my fans. One day I hope to make strides into movies and fashion as well. I want to share my creativity with the world.”
So, where will Bieber, now 20, be in 10 years? “I hope I am still blessed to be performing and making music. I hope to have a family too,” he shares. Those wishes tie together two of the most important things in Bieber’s life: family and fans. Lagerfeld asks what is the “one thing” he’ll never do, and Bieber replies, “Give up on myself, my family, or my fans.”
Bieber seems quite pleased with his Lagerfeld experience. He tweeted, “@vmagazine loved working with. @KarlLagerfeld #genius.” The star also cheekily noted that slightly visible in the pics, “Those were @CalvinKlein underwear too. #mycalvins :)” Click here to see the photos!
