Amy Adams is baffled by the way the “Today Show” treated her earlier this week, when the morning show canceled her appearance at the last minute after Adams expressed discomfort with questions about the Sony hacking. As Gossip Cop was the first to report, NBC producers (not Adams) were responsible for torpedoing her scheduled appearance on Monday, shortly after the actress hosted the network’s last “Saturday Night Live” of the year.
On Tuesday, Adams spoke about what happened at a Big Eyes screening in Los Angeles. She had been invited on the “Today Show” to promote the new movie, but producers insisted that the Sony saga would be incorporated into the brief interview. Adams is only tangentially linked to the situation because leaked emails revealed she received less compensation for American Hustle than her male co-stars.
“I expressed that I was uncomfortable,” she told USA Today at the Tuesday screening. “I said I would rather not add my voice to this conversation. But it was clear they were drawing a hard line. That this would be part of the conversation.”
Adams continued, “I walked away from the conversation and went up to the room to do the interview. I assumed they were going to ask me about [the Sony hacking]. And I was prepared for that, to whatever degree I was prepared.” Moments later, the show canceled her sit-down. “I was informed that they had decided to pull the interview,” said Adams. “I was confused and definitely frustrated. I still don’t understand.”
NBC later explained that Adams was removed from the broadcast because “as a news program, the ‘Today Show’ doesn’t allow guests to put restrictions on interviews.” It’s still not clear that that’s what actually happened here.
