Serial Podcast Mocked in Funny or Die Parody: Host Sarah Koenig Unravels in Search for True Killer

All of your burning questions, not answered! With the 12th and final episode of Serial airing Thursday, Dec. 18, Funny or Die parodied the smash podcast hosted by This American Life’s Sarah Koenig with its own twisted rendition of “answers.”

Michaela Watkins stars in the clip as Koenig, who is faced with a deluge of questions from her peers, partners, and even from herself, about the ending of the true-crime podcast.

“Big finale episode today! Who did it?!” fictional Koenig is told by her producer. “Nobody knows who did it but you. And the person who did it. But today everybody else finds out!” But does Koenig even know?

“Sorry, I need to check on something," Watkins (as Koenig) says in the clip. She is then seen on Best Buy’s website looking up the search term “payphone,” only to receive the response of “polyphony.”

Buckling under pressure, she dials Adnan Syed — who remains behind bars for the 1999 murder of Woodlawn High School senior Hae Min Lee — and unsuccessfully attempts to figure out the truth.

“I guess what I’m trying to say is… I don’t know anything,” she says to Syed over the phone.

Frustrated and nearly defeated, she then texts key witness Jay. “I was hoping it was you,” her message reads. “Promise u didn’t do it?”

Jay’s response? “Sorry, this isn’t Jay. I’m borrowing his phone today.”

The host takes to her seat for her final podcast of season one and speculates: “Maybe we’ll never know who killed Hae Min Lee…” as the executives from MailChimp shake their heads in repulsion. “J/K,” Koenig says. “J/K. I know exactly who did it.”
