From One Man To Another: How To Embrace Feminism

If you’re a man who wants to advocate for feminism, here are a few tips that will help you on your journey.

Read literature by women.

Put down the tabloids, because they contradict themselves on a daily basis, and explore books written by great writers such as Audre Lorde, Toni Morrison, bell hooks, and Simone de Beauvoir. Read books that challenge gender roles and stereotypes. Critique them too.

Shut up and listen.

You will never know what it’s like being a woman, and since you’re pretty new to the whole feminism thing, listening is key. The stories of men are always heard. Women’s voices, on the other hand, are constantly silenced and belittled. Give women the platform and use it as an opportunity to listen.

Remove "not all men" from your vocabulary.

Instead of saying "not all men" when women speak about their experiences, listen to what they're sharing. There will be more opportunities to speak about other issues; just know when and when not to bring them up.

Embrace intersectionality.

Intersectionality involves taking into the account the, erm, intersections that make women different, such as social class, race, sexuality, and nationality. It's easy to say "we're all one people" when you have privilege. It's important to listen to women from all walks of life, not just those who benefit from certain privileges.
