Justin Bieber is mourning the death of his family’s longtime dog, Sammy. The superstar revealed on Instagram on Thursday night that the pooch has passed away. See the full photo Bieber shared below.

Alongside the old snapshot of himself with the rescued Papillion, Bieber wrote, “R.i.p Sammy,” with several sad emoticons. He added, “you were the best puppy ever.” That was enough for Beliebers to get #RIPSammy trending on Twitter in the United States within minutes, and it went on to become the number one trending topic worldwide.

“I’m so sorry @justinbieber we love you and are here for you! #RIPSammy,” tweeted one fan. Another wrote, “having a dog myself makes me feel even more for Justin and how sad he must be right now, i can’t even imagine :( #ripsammy.” A different Twitter user pointed out how Sammy “literally grew up with Justin,” while another said, “He was here from the beginning, I can’t believe this. I’m so sad.”

Indeed, Sammy was no stranger to devoted fans who have followed Bieber’s career and family closely. Back in 2009, the singer opened up about his pet in a Peta2 interview (see below), revealing that the pup became his “friend” when he moved to a new town where he didn’t know anyone. Sammy also appeared in Bieber’s concert movie, Never Say Never.

Sammy’s cause of death is not known, but some have speculated the dog needed to be put down. Check out Bieber’s old photo and video below.
