John Oliver ended the first season of “Last Week Tonight” in style on Sunday, firing a salmon cannon at celebrities including Tom Hanks, Jimmy Fallon, Kelly Ripa and David Letterman. That’s right. We said salmon cannon.
Here’s the background: A company has developed a “salmon cannon” to help the fish return to their spawning grounds in rivers that have been disrupted by dams. The result is a mesmerizing process in which salmon are loaded into a long tube and fired (gently!) out the other end, where they can happily mate. Oliver was so entranced by the salmon cannon, he decided to shoot a bunch of celebrities in the face with his own version.
Jon Stewart, Dwight Howard, Seth Meyers, Anderson Cooper, Rachael Ray, Joel McHale, Wanda Sykes, Mario Batali, Wayne Brady, Meredith Vieira and Stephen Colbert were among the targets in the epic clip. It’s hypnotic to see their famous faces slapped with salmon.
Oliver also manages to hit fictional characters like Homer Simpson, Dr. Meredith Grey, the “Modern Family” guys and R2-D2. All of them take salmon to the face. No one appeared to be seriously injured. It’s worth watching. Check out the video below, and tell us what you think!
