Jack Bruce, the Cream singer and bassist, has died at 71. His family confirmed the news on the rock legend’s Facebook page on Saturday.
“It is with great sadness that we, Jack’s family, announce the passing of our beloved Jack: husband, father, granddad, and all round legend,” reads the statement. “The world of music will be a poorer place without him, but he lives on in his music and forever in our hearts.”
The official cause of death has not been disclosed, although there are reports Bruce suffered from liver disease. A publicist noted, “He died today at his home in Suffolk surrounded by his family.”
Bruce formed Cream with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker in 1966, and the power trio went on to sell millions of psychedelic rock albums, featuring hits like “Sunshine of Your Love” and “White Room.” Their release Wheels of Fire became the first platinum-selling double album. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and later played reunion shows in 2005 and 2006.
Considered one of the best bass players in history, Bruce released more than a dozen solo albums after Cream split in 1968, including Silver Rails last March.
