‘Jane the Virgin’: Mother and Daughter Have an “Emotional” Heart to Heart (Exclusive)

Is Jane rethinking her life?

In the premiere of The CW's Jane the Virgin, 23-year-old Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) discovers she is pregnant after being mistakenly artificially inseminated by her gynecologist. The father of the unborn child? Her teenage crush Rafael (Justin Baldoni), himself a cancer survivor.

The second episode, airing Oct. 20, sees Jane heading to the doctor's office for a routine checkup and it's then she hears the baby's heartbeat for the first time. The Hollywood Reporter exclusively debuts an emotional scene between Jane and her mother, Xiomara (Andrea Navedo), who have a serious heart-to-heart about Jane's impending life change. As the scene unfolds, it's clear Jane's unexpected pregnancy and decision to hand over the baby to Rafael and his wife, Petra (Yael Grobglas), is weighing heavily on her — to the point where she breaks down.

"The relationship between Jane and her mother is at the center of our series, and grounds the more outrageous elements of our telenovela," executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman tells THR. "This is one of my favorite scenes in the second episode. Gina's performance is so strong that we just let her whole breakdown play out in one long take. There are no cuts to enhance or articulate her performance because it was all there, in real time, in a real way. It's emotional, it's messy and it's heartbreaking."

Jane the Virgin airs 9 p.m. Mondays on The CW.
