The Twilight Saga is continuing — but not in the way most probably expected.

On Tuesday, Stephenie Meyer announced that the characters of her book-and-movie franchise will be the subjects of a new short film series created by aspiring female filmmakers.

“The Storytellers – New Creative Voices of The Twilight Saga,” a partnership between Meyer, Lionsgate, Women in Film, Facebook, and the crowdsourcing platform Tongal, will consist of a “multiphase contest” in which at least five directors are chosen to create films.

The shorts will be “based on a broad spectrum of characters from the Twilight universe, with guidance provided by Meyer’s encyclopedic The Twilight Saga: Official Illustrated Guide.”

The development process will be assisted by celebrity mentors, and include chances for engagement with fans through social media.

A panel — slated to include Twilight Saga star Kristen Stewart, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer and more notable names — will select the winning projects, which will get to premiere on Facebook next year.

Fans will ultimately get to choose the top winner, who will receive “a cash prize and career opportunities.”

Meyer says in a statement, “The female voice is something that has become more and more important to me as I’ve worked in the film industry. I’m honored to be working with Women In Film, Lionsgate, and Facebook on a project dedicated to giving more women a chance to be heard creatively.”
